2012 Carolinas Regional Convention

Are you ready for another exciting regional convention coming up over the weekend of March 16-18, 2012 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina?  We have some great events and training opportunities lined up to make this another very special convention.  The weekend will include a visit from Patrick Grady from Today and Tomorrow Enterprises as our first general session keynote speaker.  Patrick has received rave reviews after speaking at past Carolinas Region Leadership Conferences and Conventions, and has also served as a guest speaker at the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention Officers Workshops in Anaheim, California and Dallas, Texas. During the first general session we will also have a Parade of Chapters with Chapter Roll Calls so have your chapters put together something unique to let us know you're in the House.  We will also be awarding the Carolinas Region Service Project awards, Carolinas Region Honors in Action Project awards, Carolinas Super Stars awards, and Carolinas Hall of Honor awards at this session.  After the First General Session we will have a Political Rally where everyone will get a chance to meet the new regional officer candidates followed by a special treat as Patrick Grady will also be providing his "Leadership Can Be…Hypno-larious" presentation on Friday evening. On Saturday morning there will be Educational Workshops and the Second General Session where we will receive news from Phi Theta Kappa  Headquarters and hear speeches from our Regional Officer Candidates. The convention will also include a Merchandise Mart, Election of new Regional Officers, a Carolinas Region Alumni Induction Ceremony, a Saturday evening Awards Banquet and Social/Dance, an Alumni Association Sponsored Banner Contest (see link to flyer below), and much, much more!!!  So if you haven't already made your plans, make them now to join us in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for this wonderful convention. 2012 Carolinas Region Leadership Opportunities - Running for Regional Office

Are you looking for a wonderful leadership opportunity and a great way to expand your Phi Theta Kappa experience?  We will be electing new regional officers at the 2012 Carolinas Regional Convention in March. Officers serve a term of one year beginning at their installation at the 2012 regional convention and ending with the installation of new officers at the 2013 regional convention. There have been many Carolinas chapter officers and members this past year who have expressed an interest in this opportunity and would make excellent regional officers. If you are interested in this great opportunity make sure your chapter lists you as a candidate on the 2012 convention registration form and that you send in your bio by the stated deadline of February 17, 2012 (no late entries will be accepted).  Below you will find links to information in both Word and PDF formats on the requirements for running for regional office as well as general officer duties and information on campaigning for regional office.  Some of the benefits of being a regional officer include: region pays for registration and room at all regional events, reimbursement of registration to the following year's international convention, and most of all, a great chance to develop your leadership skills.  In return, officers are expected to attend all regional events and help with planning and implementing the programs - there is also opportunity for additional travel throughout the region, but it is not a requirement to be an officer. This type of background also looks good on resumes and college scholarship applications and it is actually less time-consuming to be a regional officer than being a chapter officer.  Please e-mail the regional coordinator, John Sharpe, at john.sharpe@hgtc.edu if you have any questions about running for office.  Thanks to all of you who make the Carolinas such a great region.

Phi Theta Kappa Five Star Chapter Development Plan

Mission Statement
This plan, which reflects the scholarly ideals of Phi Theta Kappa, serves as a blueprint for developing a strong chapter and for earning local, regional, and international recognition. In this plan, chapters do not compete against one another. Participation encourages excellence and recognizes progress in the attainment of goals set by the chapter.
Using the Five Star Chapter Development Plan as a guide to success, chapters can enhance their working relationship with the college administration by becoming active on the campus and in the community. On a personal level, involvement in the program will educate chapter members in the importance of deadlines and organizational skills.
The strength of Phi Theta Kappa is determined by the achievements of chapters on the local level. Recognition for these achievements provides reinforcement and encourages a recommitment to chapter goals.  To access the Five Star Chapter Development Plan and requirements go to www.ptk.org and login using your personal credentials.  Once you are logged in, click on the icon at the bottom of the screen with the "five stars" on it.  This will take you to the Five Star Chapter Development Plan information page.

The online Chapter Update Form should be completed by Advisors or Chapter Officers only.  For the 2011 Five Star Chapter Development Plan, the final update is due on December 31, 2011. Chapters should update their progress regularly during the January - December timeline.  To access the update form login to the Phi Theta Kappa website at www.ptk.org and go to the Five Star Chapter Development Plan page by clicking on the five star icon on the bottom of the page.  Select "Progress Report" from the menu on the right hand side and sign in.  This will bring you to the progress report where you can update your chapters status.
