Meeting Minutes from November 20, 2010

Meeting called to order on November 20, 2010.

In Attendance:    Traci Trouton-Burr          Dianne Mooring Ver Vaecke         Brenda Oxford
Pepe Zerda                     Marsha Parker Britton                   Judy Coker
Rhonda Ennis                  Katie Griffin                                   Lisa York
                          Beth Carraway, Advisor

Beth Carraway reported that to-date we have made approximately $800 from the sale of t-shirts for the Joan Keller Scholarship Foundation.  It was also noted we will be selling t-shirts again at the Regional Convention.

New Business:
It was suggested to the members that we should form a Resource Group for the Carolinas Region.  The group would volunteer to help chapters get started, act as a speaker at an induction, conduct workshops, etc., depending on the chapter’s need.  The member selected to assist would have already submitted their information and be on the Resource List for the region.  Discussion followed regarding the information to put on the list, as well as, whether any type of compensation for gas mileage would be required and how far the alumni was willing to travel.  Pepe indicated she could only go on weekends.  All alumni agreed we did not want to take any opportunity away from the regional officers and that we were only there for support.  We are targeting Regional Convention to have all the information to Traci and then present it to the Advisors and the Regional Coordinator to see if anyone is interested in using our services.

Our attention was then directed to the theme for the upcoming Regional Convention Awards Banquet.  The banquet theme is “The Carolinas: Fulfilling the Promise of Democracy through Knowledge”.  The color scheme is black, white, silver, and gold.  No committee has been formed for the decorating; however, Brenda indicated that you just tell someone you need help and they come.

The next item for discussion was the Joan Keller Scholarship Foundation.  It was discussed that we award the Joan Keller Scholarship to the recipient at the Regional Convention.  Everyone seemed to like that and it was further discussed that Pepe would try to obtain a list of the past recipients in order to put them on a Gallery wall.

We then moved on to the possibility of obtaining a GPS for our Regional Coordinator as he travels so much.  It was suggested that the alumni “pass the hat” and give John the GPS as a Christmas gift.  It was then questioned as to whether or not he could accept such a gift.  Finally, we decided to purchase a Tom Tom GPS and give it to him as the last door prize during the final general session of the Leadership Conference.
Due to John’s hearing loss, it was discussed for the alumni to have a “Communication Skills Workshop” at the Regional Convention in March and have a sign language class since John is now learning sign language.  We are going to ask Tara Rouse if she could possibly teach that class.  There was also mention of the following website to learn more about sign language:  http://www.aslpro.com .

With no further business, Traci Trouton-Burr adjourned the meeting.
